PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Overview

Providing opportunities, support and encouragement for personal professional development is a core belief at ALC Rabat. Pre-service and in-service training opportunities offer new and experienced teachers several options. ALC Rabat teachers are also encouraged to apply for an ALC scholarship to attend the annual IATEFL conference in the UK.

English Teaching
Internship Initiative (ETII)

ALC Rabat is a leading partner in ETII, a teacher training and language learning program administered by the American Cultural Association. Participation is free of charge for both trainees and students, as part of ALC Rabat's and the ACA's community service outreach. ETII expands the quality, reach, and accessibility of English language teaching and learning in Morocco.

For more information, visit the ETII website at www.etii.co

Pre-Service Training

ALC Rabat instructors participate in an orientation course that introduces them to the center's curriculum, assessment, general policies and procedures, facilities, personal mentors, and key staff.

In-Service Professional Development

Self-Directed Professional Development Program

In addition to more traditional avenues, ALC Rabat's self-directed professional development program offers maximum flexibility and recognition for self-directed efforts. Our simple program identifies a wide range of eligible activities that may be pursued at the center, at home, online, and at other organizations.

Achievement milestones are documented and awarded via ALC Rabat's badges, administered by Canvas LMS Credentials (formerly Badgr). Members have life-long access to clickable digital badges, verified by embedded metadata and easily shared on social media and employment/university applications.

Participants also earn points that unlock opportunities for gifts, bonuses, and eligibility to attend the annual IATEFL Conference in the United Kingdom.

Traditional Professional Development Program

Faculty and guest presenters offer traditional face-to-face workshops and other activities. Instructors are also supported and encouraged to participate in peer observations and other activities. Participation in this program is linked to ALC Rabat badges and points, described above.

Financial Assistance practicum

Full-time instructors who pursue advanced degrees (e.g., masters, PhD, DELTA) may be eligible for modest financial support, and efforts are made to accommodate study and research schedules.

Mentoring

All new instructors are matched with a mentor for the first full term of teaching. Mentor and mentee follow a weekly plan that addresses the curriculum, lesson planning, classroom management, policies and procedures, assessment, and more. Mentors also offer general support for mentees new to Morocco, such as shopping, activity and transportation tips.

All-ALC TEFL Conference

Each year, faculty and staff from all twelve American Language Centers come together for their annual TEFL and administrative conference. The conference is held in a different city each year and is attended by nearly 1,000 members of the ALC/ACA community. Leading guest presenters and speakers are invited.
